I'm Nahom Assefa, an experimental artist who specializes in digital art while also getting my hands on creative writing and photography. My passion for art first began from writing a comic book during childhood. Over the years, this passion slowly changed into an obsession with visual and written storytelling. Drawing heavily from cultural art styles and traditions across the world.
Travel has been a vital part of my life. Born in Malaysia, raised in Ethiopia, and now based in Canada, these experiences enriched my work. Whether it's the unique aesthetics of a new city, the mouth-watering flavors of local cuisine, or the rich stories shared by people I meet, travel keeps my brain juices flowing. It allows me to see the world in fresh and inspiring ways. It has taught me compassion, humility, and the value of diversity.
My art, whether through illustrations for Halifax Public Libraries or the passion projects I've dedicated over the years, serves as a bridge between these diverse cultures. Creating a visual common ground that emphasizes our shared humanity.
As an artist, I aim to find beauty in our differences and visually demonstrate how we can work together. Show a narrative where unity and peace is possible. I have a role in providing a visual reference for hope during times of despair. A duty to challenge the narrative of modernism that cutting off our roots impedes growth. It’s through strengthening the root that a tree grows and touches the heavens.
My work also pleads for openness to other cultures. As stereotypes and discrimination rise in this globalizing world, I aim to save face for those who have been prejudiced by showing the positive aspects. A continuous exploration of "the foreign" that seeks to understand and bridge cultural differences while celebrating the beauty within them.
Ultimately, I am a lifelong learner, a self-taught artist constantly evolving and pushing the boundaries of storytelling and cultural preservation. To continue what my forefathers have tried to do by telling the story that resides in our unconscious mind. Through my art, I hope to create a sense of belonging and empathy. We’re all in this together. A battle against suffering and a respite from pain.
