Halifax Public Libraries presented the African Heritage Month T-Shirt Design Contest. The goal was to create a design that encapsulated the essence of the 40th anniversary of African Heritage Month, reflecting the rich history and diversity of the African diaspora in Nova Scotia. The patterns were used for t-shirt design, posters, and on the African Heritage Website.
It was incredible to discover that I had won this competition. It was a relief knowing that this competition allowed me to contribute something to the community. I’m also honored to be part of a special moment marking the 40th anniversary of African Heritage Month; a celebration that holds significant historical importance.
I drew inspiration from previous designs, particularly focusing on incorporating African patterns. Patterns are crucial as they symbolize the interweaving story of African diasporas and the Black community’s integration. Like patterns, the journey to call Nova Scotia home is one of settling and intertwining, reflecting both the joys and struggles of people of African descent.
Participating in the African Heritage Month T-Shirt Design Contest was a beautiful experience, allowing me to show my passion for art and culture. I hope that my design serves a deeper appreciation for the diverse narratives within our community.
