The dead are not truly gone. As long as their memory lives, they stay with us—through small reminders, a funny gesture, something that made us feel special, or the kindness they shared.
While we might seek comfort through distractions to bear the weight of loss, the most honorable way is to allow ourselves to feel in its entirety. Loss comes in waves, often in the most mundane moments. And this loss doesn’t always mean death; it can also be the parting of paths.
To the memories of lost friendships, family, relationships—let yourself ride those waves. Welcome them as guests, for it’s better to feel that weight than to forget it. So to the full spectrum of separation, I say Feliz Día de los Muertos!
